We breed Leicester Longwool sheep for the quality of their fibre. The rare breed Leicester Longwools provide large fleeces of long silky locks which is a high lustre wool.
We love the whole process of looking after the ewes and their winter coats, the excitement of shearing time and then the long summer days of skirting, washing and processing the fleece so it can be stored for the long winter days when we can enjoy fibre crafts by the log burner.
Keeping a flock of sheep for their fleece quality is a challenge for any shepherd. The goal from shear to shear is to keep the wool clear of VM ( vegetable matter, such as bramble, twigs, sticky buds, hay and straw)! open - so not all felted or matted together, and even in length. We work closely with our expert shearer to ensure on shearing day the fleeces stay clean and dry ready for processing.
We also purchase wool from local high welfare farms who breed pure bred pedigree sheep, rare breeds and produce high quality fleeces like us. We do our best to be at their farms on shearing day to ensure the quality of the wools and help on what is a very busy day in the shepherds calendar.
